Get Back to Nature with Forest Bathing

Computers, phones, TVs—we spend most of our time inside, attached to devices. Whether you realize it or not, spending so much time indoors connected to screens can take a toll on your physical and mental well-being.

So what’s the remedy for too much time inside? You may want to take a bath—a forest bath that is. Before you grab the soap, forest bathing doesn’t involve an actual bath. It just means spending time in nature among the trees.

Here’s a look at how disconnecting from screens and connecting to nature can be so beneficial, and how to get started.

Natural Roots

Our prehistoric ancestors lived outdoors and were closely tied with nature. To survive, they needed to spot shelter, prey, and predator easily. While our way of life has changed dramatically since then, our brains are still mostly the same. We crave a connection with nature.

And research shows that when you get that connection with the great outdoors, it can have a big impact on how you feel. Spending time in nature may help reduce stress and symptoms of depressions, boost your energy and focus, and improve connections with others. And if you exercise outside, you might work harder without even realizing it—it might actually feel easier.

Get Connected

It’s time to put down the devices and renew your connection with nature. Here are a few simple ways to do just that:

  • Take your workout outdoors. Instead of hitting the treadmill, take a walk, run, or bike ride at the park or local trail.

  • Be a weekend warrior. If finding time to get outside is a challenge during the week, plan to spend your weekend outdoors. You could take a camping trip, spend the day hiking, or even take your dog to the dog park.

  • Get others involved. Go for a walk with friends instead of sitting inside to catch up or take the kids to the park.
